Introducing Bootcamp
8 04 2006Apple has released Bootcamp, a program for OSX that will repartition your drive without formatting OSX and allow you to then natively install Windows XP, with full driver support.
In order to run Bootcamp, you will need a few things. Obviously (and most importantly) you need an Intel powered Mac, such as an iMac, or a MacBook Pro. Along with that, you will need the latest firmware update, and OSX 10.4.6. After ensuring you have all of the requirements, install Bootcamp, partition your Windows partition, and reboot from the XP disc.
The best part about Bootcamp, though, that sets it apart from the Windows XP on Mac project is that Bootcamp will create a drivers CD for you that includes all of the neccessary drivers to run XP normally. The best part is that it includes full 3d accelerated video drivers, allowing you to take full advantage of your fancy mac video card and being able to game. I have played (and I am now an addict) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on my 17″ iMac and it works beautifully. I have all of the settings up to the maximum level, including 3x antialiasing and a 1440×900 widescreen resolution.
Just a note to those who need to update to the latest firmware to use this, you will not be able to upgrade if you have ever used the customized boot loader from XOM, the xp on mac project. You will need to format your drive and reinstall OSX, then attempt the firmware upgrade.
You can download the latest firmware and OS updates from Apple at apple.com/downloads.
Please remember that Apple’s Bootcamp is in public beta stages so their is no suport or guarantees on any part of it. Download Bootcamp.

Does the iMac camera work when booted in XP? (are there drivers for it?) ?
Unfortunatley, iSight is currently unsupported.
This is very handy. However, I have a question: Is it good? I’ve heard some people say that it “sucks”.
