Radeon x1600 in MacBook Pro Massively Underclocked!

19 04 2006

Well, it seems as though some Mac enthusiasts have discovered that the Radeon x1600 video card in the MacBook Pros are actually severely underclocked, from 470MHz/470MHz to a pathetic 310MHz / 278MHz. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is still an amazing video card, however with a video card so powerful, why let it under perform? By downloading ATI Tools beta version 0.25, you can overclock (normalclock?) it back to its desired speed. However, there are draw backs — if you do this, you must put up with a higher fan speed, which makes more noise. I also read at the link that ATI Tools beta version 0.25 is unstable using Apples drivers, so you must use the ATI Optimized drivers. You can read more about it and get all of the information you need from the article at hardmac.com.
