Update: Stuffplug has now been released an is available here!

Yes that’s right! A techthisout.net exclusive preview of the newest pre-beta build of StuffPlug3, the very popular (now stand-alone!) add-on for Windows Live Messenger (which from now on will be reffered to as WLM).

It installed easily and quickly, but the installer isn’t the final one that will be “shipped” with StuffPlug3, so I won’t really say much about it.

The thing I noticed after the installation was the seamless incorporation into WLM. As you can see from the screenshot below, it adds an icon and a menu (very much like MsgPlus! does) to make it alot easier to get to the options. This is certainly a great improvement to the old method of going to the options via typing in a conversation window or going into the Plus! options.

I then decided to have a look around it, and after exploring the menu, had a look at the Welcome Screen:

Here we see everything nicely laid out, with a damn nice new interface! There’s not a whole lot to say about it, so I shall move swiftly on to the first options pages.

General Options:

There are 3 options, the first being to do with WLM add-ins, and the next two are pretty self explanatory.

The Content Stealer.

This steals Display Pictures, Emoticons, Dynamic Pictures and Winks. The thing that impressed me most, was its ability to steal the emoticon at it’s original size (before the other person’s WLM resized it), and contrary to the older versions of StuffPlug, it actually steals everything and not just a few display pictures and emoticons here and there.

New Mail Icon in the System Tray

Here’s a brand new feature for StuffPlug, and got to be one of my favourites. Now at a glance you can see if you have any emails, without having to check the main messenger window each time.

Now onto the “Conversation” options screen:

Here we see 7 features (a lot less disappointing than the first options page) consisting of:

Use a Chat Only Name

This feature was in most previous versions of StuffPlug, and for those who don’t know, this feature allows you to choose a different name to appear when you’re in a conversation. Very useful if you have a long name that you want people to see, but want a short and simple name to appear when you’re chatting to your buddies.

Action Text

As you can see from the screenshot, it allows you to send messages that look identical to what you see when you send/recieve a nudge.

Fake Invite

Allows you to send fake invites to contacts, which gets very confusing for them!

Obviously it doesn’t actually send anything, and if they accept, all they see is: “This activity or game is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”
Doesn’t make it any less fun though! ;)

Allow Talking To Contacts You Blocked

Unfortunatly this feature isn’t quite working yet, but when it is, I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes! It’s obvious what it does though, and will be useful for all those people you don’t want to delete, don’t want them to start messaging you, but still might need to contact from time to time!

Boost Character Limit

This allows you to send as many as 5,000 characters per message in a conversation.

Make Window Icons Reflect Contact’s Status

Now this is another brand new feature, and another of my favourites!
Wheras before, you didn’t know if people had changed status without looking at the main WLM or conversation window, you can now see easily! The screenshot sums it up well:

Flash Keyboard LED when Fullscreen App

Useful for all you CounterStrike players out there. ;) This feature makes one or more LED (”little light” or CapsLock/NumLock/ScrollLock light for all you PC illiterates out there!) flash when someone messages you when you have a fullscreen program open.

Again, this is a feature that’s not yet complete, but will certainly come in handy when it is!

Lastly, the “Contact List” options.

Allow Editing of Friendly Names in the Contact List

Allows you to change your WLM name without having to go into the options, the same way as you do your personal message.

Unfortunaly it isn’t 100% compatible with MsgPlus, but TheBlasphemer is working on getting it sorted.

Enable Ad Hider

I’ve been waiting for this, and although it doesn’t completely remove the advertisment at the bottom of the contact list, it does hide it (as the name suggests) and makes it alot less offensive to the eye.

And that’s it so far!

Well….. You’d think so, but I have a list of all the features that are yet to be added!

  • Getting the contact’s emoticon keystroke when you Install an emoticon you are stealing from them. (Just like the existing “Add” in WLM)
  • New Installer (not really a feature but still good!)
  • An Auto-updater, so you’ll be able to get the newest versions without having to visit the website.
  • Open all links in the default browser
  • Auto complete commands (such as !fakeinvite). Also the old /[command] commands will probably be brought back to replace doing ![command]
  • Give you the opion to auto-disable commands that did not load correctly
  • Allowing over-sized emoticons
  • Ignore Feature (they can talk to you, but you won’t see any of the messages. Saves you having to block them and risk them finding out!)
  • Timestamps also might return, but this isn’t definite

As of yet, there is no timescale for beta-testing, or any release date, so you’ll just have to be patient! I shall keep you updated if and when I get new versions.

NOTE: I will not be giving ANYONE a download link, so please don’t bother asking.

The About Screen

As everyone seems to be asking, the theme I’m using is LonghornPro, and it’s for StyleXP :D

About the Window Opened/Closed Notifier

The Window Opened Notifier will not return due to the way MSN7.x (which is used by all pre-XP users) requests display pictures. The notifier used to work by detecting when your display pic was requested, which only happened when a convo window was opened.

MSN7.x now uses contact cards/display pics in the contacts window/display pics in the sign-in popup, so now when ANY of those happen, it would make the notifier popup (even if someone just opened your contact card) which makes it highly inaccurate and therefore pretty useless.

The Window Closed Notifier will no longer be included as current versions of WLM/MSN close the connection woth your contact when they have been inactive for so many minutes. The notifier worked by detecting when the connection had been closed, with the only way of it being closed being when the window was closed. As I previously said, the connection is now randomly closed, so you would recieve a notification not only when the window had been closed, but after your contact had been idle for so long, which makes it inaccurate.

Understandably, TheBlasphemer only wants to include fully functional features, as otherwise, when it pops up and someone hasn’t opened/closed a convo, everyone will moan and complain about it.

Regardless of how great/inaccurate you think the feature is, it WILL NOT BE PUT BACK IN, no matter how many times you ask, and no matter what you do or say.

Let that be the last that is said about them, and all future comments asking about them will be deleted.

I can’t stand the WLM timestamps, not only are they after the name, but they only allow hours and minutes… If they were at the beginning of the name fair enough, but at the end when the names are different lengths/span more than one line, I find it impossible to easily look at them…
Plus, I like a bit of accuracy in my timestamps :P

notifiers :

it’s sad that open/closed window notifiers won’t be back and since they do it all for free, they don’t have to do anything they don’t want.

But it’s a SHAME that users can’t even talk about that in stuffplug website. I’m not talking about simply requesting it, but even discussing about it is not allowed. In fact, any message you post there that do not praise stuffplug, that disagree with stuffplug staff, even in a polite way, will not be welcome and will probably get deleted with no reason. Disagreement is just not accepted and they don’t want people to know WON/WCN can still be useful to many users.

I think the comment before mine explains why no discussion is allowed.
The second they let anyone mention it, even in discussion, you get 50 people asking why its being taken out, and moaning because they want it back. No matter HOW many times you explain, they don’t listen, so they spoit it for the majority :)

They WILL NOT be put back regardless of anything you say, even if you say it till you’re blue in the face.

Stealing display pictures from others are fun.. for a few days :P But why I use Stuffplugin now:
45% - Hour / Minute / !Second! formatted timestamps (in the begining of the line!)
35% - Oversized display pictures
5% - I can have more then 3 simultaneous transfers
5% - 5000 character boost
5% - Talking to blocked contacts
Looks like I have to stay with MM7.5 and SPNG2.2.397 ^_^
Anyway. I like the keyboard led flashing feature and the other new features as well ^^

may i ask why isnt this being released? is there any reason at all to why its not being released? i think about 99.9% of the public is already happy with the product. Even if some features are not available, they could be released in later versions! i just dont understand why they are holding back on stuffplug 3 when everyone is already very happy with it.

Another thing is if this thing isnt released soon, scripts will overtake stuffplug

msgpluslive has many scripts that are very customizable and useful. I would even say all these 200+ scripts are definitely better than stuffplug 3 itself. Of course i wouldnt mind waiting for stuffplug but its such a long wait and i just dont understand why they are holding it back.

I agree with the idea of adding a function as as “block checker”, there are various websites with that thing all over the internet and they work! but, it’s complicated cause sometimes it demands that we choose a server to make it work, it’s a pain in the…. lol so, i would trust it more if it comes from people like you, because you are the ONLY ones who always make things that REALLY WORKS, anyway, keep the good work!! The new release seems to be great!! Waiting for it!! Hurry:P

Most of the features are as stuffplug had all along, except the open/ close windows - which isn’t practical anymore due to the microsoft’s new protocol…
Still - a great plug in! definitely the best for the MSN Messenger!

rhis program can fix the bug that happens when you change your state to offline?
when you do that for a long time, you cant send messages any more! =P
And this is a little suggestion.. you can put a little audio icon, under the personal picture, where people can put a few seconds of an audio (for example, a song)….is like another personal thing that represents you, (in a cool way) in addition to your picture. This audio icon represents you by the music you listen =P. I think that is a very good idea….then i have more ideas, such as animated pictures by .gif, but i dont know if its possible…
what do you think about those ideas?

Seems good. However, there are a few features i’d like to suggest in Stuffplug, that i don’t think is included:

Possibility to make different sounds for different contacts (E-mail notofications, message alert, etc)

Possibility to animate your display picture

Possibility to easily create custom winks/nudge-types yourself

Option to make the conversation windows appear in the Tray

Possibility to make the contacts placed on the desktop rotateable, so you can line them up in all sorts of ways. (e.g hold down enter while moving your mouse, to rotate)

Possibility to make your contacts in the main window have different colors in the background of their names, also on the desktop, so you can make the desktop contacts smaller than their names, but still possible to recognize

Remove the limit for Nudges and other actions

Possibility to record your webcam and microphone conversations

Option to decide how much the max limit for letters is in a conversation

Possibility to make your contacts’ display picture appear as what you want (similar to the Friendly name function, just by pictures)

A complete steal function, where you can choose to steal the display picture, name, and even the font!

Possibility to paste pictures into your handwriting messages

Possibility to paste videos as your handwriting messages (with a button to play and stop)

Possibility to copy and save your handwritten messages

Possibility to write in multiple colors in your handwriting messages

Option to let custom sounds and expressions be triggered by the text you say (e.g lets you choose an expression sound to be played every time you say “Hello”

Possibility to make your font oversized, pulsating or animated

can’t wait for stuffplug3 to come out… i just installed WLM, and i’m already missing some of the features… especially the DP/icon stealer! :P

i hope in the end it comes with the “oversize DP” option… and with the option of showing a thumbnail of your contacts’ DPs (like in messenger 7.5)…

PS. Diablodoc, ask for things that actually have some sense… rotating conversation windows? video hw messages? if you want sp3 released in 2010, it might be possible… (rofl)

Lol…SNK, i meant not rotating conversation windows. Look closer at the text. I mean that the contacts that are placed on the desktop, that you can click on to make a conversation…i mean rotating them, so i can stack them up by the longside at the edges of my screen…

Anyways, these features could well be possible in this version. I’m not stupid and have done some programming myself. Although i cannot remember all my suggestions, i know that i didn’t expect ALL of them to be used. Only some of them that the team behind stuffplug finds interesting. And that may not be alot.

damn, i’m going crazy!

in Messenger 7.5, when you right-clicked on the small Messenger icon in the system tray (beside the windows clock), and clicked on “Send an instant message…”, only your contacts who are online appeared…

but now, in WLM, ALL of your contacts appear, even if they are offline! that means looking between ALL of your contacts (organized in alphabetical order) to send a msg “QUICKLY”…

and i have already exchanged 14 e-mails with the Microsoft/WLM online support asking them how to change that, and be able to see that window like in 7.5, but they are so inept, they can’t even understand what i’m asking! they’ve explained like 5 times how to show only your online contacts in the main WLM window, once explaining something about changing your cookies configuration in internet explorer, and one saying “can you repeat your info, please?” (although it was quoted below)…

before, i asked for the DP stealer and the expanded DP options… but now i’ve decided to ask for the option of hiding your not-online contacts in the quick msg window!

Kangie, could you please ask TB if he can take a look at that? thanks in advance! ;)

again… can’t wait to have the new StuffPlug! and damn those incompetent Microsoft/MSN Live “support technicians”!

PS. Diablodoc… are you sure “pasting videos as your handwriting messages (with a button to play and stop)” is a viable feature, and easily implementable? :P

It will not return due to the way MSN7.x (which is used by all pre-XP users) requests display pictures. The notifier used to work by detecting when your display pic was requested, which only happened when a convo window was opened.

MSN7.x now uses contact cards/display pics in the contacts window/display pics in the sign-in popup, so now when ANY of those happen, it would make the notifier popup (even if someone just opened your contact card) which makes it highly inaccurate and therefore pretty useless.

The closed notifier will no longer be included as current versions of WLM/MSN close the connection woth your contact when they have been inactive for so many minutes. The notifier worked by detecting when the connection had been closed, with the only way of it being closed being when the window was closed. As I previously said, the connection is now randomly closed, so you would recieve a notification not only when the window had been closed, but after your contact had been idle for so long, which makes it inaccurate.

Understandably, TheBlasphemer only wants to include fully functional features, as otherwise, when it pops up and someone hasn’t opened/closed a convo, everyone will moan and complain about it.

Regardless of how great/inaccurate you think the feature is, it WILL NOT BE PUT BACK IN, no matter how many times you ask, and no matter what you do or say.

Let that be the last that is said about them, and all future comments asking about them will be deleted.

About the video-handwriting feature: heheh, no, not easily implementable, it would of course be one of the major features. I don’t even know for sure that it is possible to do with stuffplug, since i do not surely know how the handwriting function is implemented. It is just a suggestion, incase it is possible.

Of course, IF it could be a feature, it would be one of the major features in Messenger and i guess most people would get totally surprised, seing that it was possible to do that. However, i doubt myself it would be possible to do that. And if it was, it would probably take too much time. But but, suggestions are suggestions, they’re there to help. I don’t expect every one of my ideas come true, just some that the team finds interesting ;)

Whoa! the new StuffPlug is looking awesome!! I’m holding out from downloading MSN Live until this is released coz I couldnt even dream of living without it. I am still running 7.5 atm with Stuff v2 and i love the large emoticons and being able to talk to someone on ur block list feature. I’m looking forward to v3 and I hope it comes out soon!!
